Data Science Graduates at UWC
UWC is graduating its first three students, Tayla Wannenberg, Yusrie Sadan and Samuel Mubenga in our collaborative MSc (Statistical Science) programme. This one-year master’s programme specialising in Data Science is offered in collaboration with Northwest University’s (NWU) Centre for Business, Mathematics and Informatics. Funding to launch this joint programme was provided by Sanlam and SAS® provided the needed specialised software to help us train the students. As part of the training, students do an internship at a company during the second semester which forms the basis of their industry directed research. The Department of Statistics and Population Studies staff joined forces with the NWU lecturers to make this unique training opportunity a great success. Well done to all involved!

Math4Stats 2014
On the 17th May 2014, the third Maths4Stats training in the Western Cape was concluded. These training sessions were presented for the third consecutive year in the Western Cape when StatsSA, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the Statistics and Population Studies Department at the University of the Western Cape took hands. More than 60 different Mathematics teachers registered for these training session per year. In order to qualify for the attendance certificate, teachers had to attend all training sessions spread over two months. 60 teachers were awarded certificate at the ceremony held on the 17 May 2014.
The training covered content related to Statistics topics which were newly incorporated into the CAPS Mathematics Grade 10 to 12 curriculum from 2012. Topics such as data handling, probability and regression and correlation were taught. Teachers were educated on how to use SAS curriculum Pathways, a free online training application for learners and teachers with a variety of teaching modes. SuperCross, a specialized computer application provided by StatsSA was demonstrated to show teachers how to extract information from census databases.
Four lectures from the Statistics and Population Studies Department at UWC and one lecturer from the Statistics and Actuarial Sciences Department, University of Stellenbosch, presented the statistical training. Mr Loren Wesso (Former UWC employee) now a data analyst at I&J Fisheries presented the SAS curriculum Pathways demonstration and Desireee Timmet from StatsSA presented the SuperCross demonstration. Demonstrations on the latest calculator functions were conducted by representatives from Casio and Sharp. We are thankful for SAS who came on board in 2014 to sponsor daily refreshments and for the statistical institute who sponsored the finger lunch after the certificate ceremony. In 2014, Sharp provided funding to pay our students who acted as tutors during the training sessions. Without this combined effort the training would not have been possible.
The Statistics and Population Studies Department commends all the willing lecturers, especially Prof. Renette Blignaut (Statistics and Populations Studies Associate Professor & Deputy Chairperson, UWC Math4Stats Co-coordinator) who participated in this second successful outreach programme.
